If you've narrowed your chimney cap — or chimney topper, chimney rain cap, or chimney cover, depending on who you ask — down to copper or stainless steel, you're already thinking about this the right way. Both are premium lifetime materials. Neither will rust, rot, or need replacing within your lifetime if built correctly. The decision comes down to aesthetics, environment, and what you want the cap to do for the look of your home.

Copper: The Architectural Choice
Copper is the material of historic buildings, luxury homes, and craftsmen who take the long view. It starts bright and warm — like a new penny — and develops a patina over time that moves through rich browns and eventually to the blue-green verdigris you see on old courthouses and church steeples.
That patina isn't just cosmetic. It's a stable layer of copper oxide that actually hardens the surface and makes it increasingly resistant to corrosion over time. A copper cap gets more durable as it ages — not less.
At Archaic Metal we use 16oz heavy-gauge copper — significantly heavier than the thin copper used in mass-produced caps. That means cleaner seams, better rigidity, and a cap that holds its form through decades of freeze-thaw cycles and thermal expansion.
Copper is the right choice if:

- You have or plan to add copper gutters, flashing, or other accents
- You're renovating a historic home or building a high-end custom house
- You want something that looks better at 30 years than it did at installation
One thing to plan for: Copper will stain surrounding masonry as it weathers. This is normal and expected — plan for it during installation with proper flashing and overhang.
Stainless Steel: The Performance Choice
Stainless steel doesn't change. It goes on looking clean and stays that way. There's no patina, no color shift, no staining of surrounding masonry. For homeowners who want maximum weather resistance without any visual evolution, stainless is the answer.
It's also the material of choice for coastal environments where salt air accelerates corrosion in other metals. Stainless handles salt air without issue. It's virtually indestructible in residential applications. We use 2B 304 24 gauge stainless — the same spec used in commercial and architectural applications.
Stainless steel is the right choice if:
- You're in a coastal or high-humidity environment
- You want a clean, consistent look that never changes
- The cap is in a location where it's less visible and aesthetics matter less than performance
- You need maximum durability in a harsh environment
