If copper is out of budget or simply not the right look for your home, you still have three excellent material options — and they're not interchangeable. Galvalume, Kynar aluminum, and stainless steel each have strengths, tradeoffs, and ideal use cases. Whatever you call it — chimney cap, chimney topper, chimney rain cap, or chimney cover — the material it's made from determines how long it lasts.
Here's how they stack up.
Galvalume: The Economical Workhorse
Galvalume is a steel sheet coated with a zinc-aluminum alloy. It's the same material used on commercial metal roofing across North America — proven, widely available, and significantly more affordable than copper or stainless.
The zinc-aluminum coating provides good corrosion resistance in most environments. It won't rust the way bare steel would, and it holds up well through freeze-thaw cycles and UV exposure.
Galvalume is the right choice if:
- Budget is the primary consideration
- The cap is in a location where it's not highly visible
- You need a functional, durable cap without premium material costs
- The application is straightforward — single or multi-flue, standard configuration
Where Galvalume falls short:
- Coastal environments — salt air will eventually compromise the coating faster than stainless or aluminum
- High-visibility locations where appearance matters — Galvalume has a utilitarian look that doesn't suit every home
- It will eventually show surface oxidation, though this takes many years under normal conditions
Expected lifespan: 20–40 years depending on environment and maintenance.
Kynar Aluminum: The Versatile Middle Ground
Kynar — the trade name for PVDF fluoropolymer coating — is an industrial-grade finish used on commercial buildings, metal roofing panels, and architectural metalwork worldwide. Applied over heavy-gauge aluminum, it produces a cap that is lightweight, corrosion-proof, color-stable, and available in a wide range of colors.
This is the material we recommend most often for homeowners who want a premium result without the cost of copper. The color range is extensive — black, charcoal, bronze, dark green, custom colors — and the finish holds its appearance for 25–40+ years without fading or chalking.
Kynar aluminum is the right choice if:
- You want a specific color to match your roof, trim, or siding
- You want a premium look without copper pricing
- The home is contemporary, colonial, or any style where the cap should complement rather than stand out
- You're in a moderate climate without extreme coastal salt exposure
Where Kynar aluminum falls short:
- Not the best choice for coastal environments — stainless handles salt air better
- The finish will eventually need refreshing, though this takes decades with quality Kynar
Expected lifespan: 25–50 years depending on environment and coating quality.
Stainless Steel: The Indestructible Option
Stainless steel doesn't corrode. It doesn't patina. It doesn't need a coating to protect it. It goes on looking clean and stays that way indefinitely — in coastal environments, in industrial areas, in climates with extreme temperature swings. We use 2B 304 24 gauge stainless — the same spec used in commercial and architectural applications.
For applications where performance matters more than aesthetics, or where the environment is particularly harsh, stainless is the answer. It's also the material of choice for commercial and industrial chimney applications.
Stainless steel is the right choice if:
- You're in a coastal or high-humidity environment
- Long term performance with zero maintenance is the priority
- The cap is in a harsh or corrosive environment
- You want maximum durability regardless of cost
Where stainless falls short:
- Higher cost than Galvalume or aluminum
- Limited color options — stainless has a utilitarian appearance that doesn't suit every home
- Less visually distinctive than copper
