If you've stood in the chimney cap aisle at a hardware store trying to figure out how to cover a chimney with two or three flue tiles, you already know the answer isn't there. Multi-flue chimney caps — also called chimney covers, chimney toppers, or chimney rain caps when they span the full crown — aren't a hardware store product. They never have been. Here's why — and what you actually need.
What a Multi-Flue Chimney Cap Is
A multi-flue cap is a single cap that covers the entire chimney crown — all flue tiles included — rather than individual caps on each tile. It spans the full width of the chimney top, sits on or wraps around the outside of the crown, and encloses everything underneath it with a spark screen.
The result is a chimney that is fully protected — crown, flue tiles, and all the masonry in between — under one unified cover.
Why Hardware Stores Don't Sell Them
Hardware store chimney caps are designed to fit a range of standard flue tile sizes. They're single-flue covers — a lid for one hole. They work by clamping onto the clay tile itself, which means they only cover that tile. The crown around it stays exposed.
A multi-flue cap has to be built to the specific outside dimensions of a specific chimney. Every chimney is different — different crown size, different number of flues, different flue spacing, different height above the crown. There's no standard size to put on a shelf.
This is why every multi-flue cap has to be custom fabricated. It's not an upsell — it's the only way the product can exist.
The Crown Problem With Single-Flue Caps
Even on a single-flue chimney, a hardware store cap leaves the crown exposed. On a multi-flue chimney, individual caps on each tile leave the crown exposed AND leave the masonry between the flues exposed. That's the area most likely to collect water, develop cracks, and admit moisture into the chimney structure.
A multi-flue cap that covers the entire crown eliminates that exposure entirely. It's the difference between partially covering a chimney and actually protecting one.

How to Order
Measure the outside length and width of your chimney crown — the full masonry surface, not just the flue tiles. Note the number of flues and how far each tile protrudes above the crown.
