The Modern Louvered Chimney Cap is the most architecturally detailed cap I build. A full-perimeter louvered body with integrated side screens, a double-stepped fascia above it, curved standing seam panels tapering upward to a crown, and a solid removable lid on top. Side mount or top mount. Built to your exact chimney dimensions in copper, Kynar-painted aluminum, or Galvalume. Stainless steel is not available in this style.
The profile reads like a cupola — louvered sides, curved standing seam roof, strong crown details above and below the curve. If you searched "cupola chimney cap," "blade chimney cap," "finned chimney cap," or "modern louvered chimney cap" and landed here, you're in the right place.
What It Does
The louvered body runs the full perimeter of the cap — horizontal fins with integrated side screens that block rain, debris, and animals while keeping airflow open. Above the louvers, a double-stepped fascia adds strong horizontal shadow lines and architectural definition before the profile transitions into curved panel sides. A crown detail wraps the cap at the roofline. The solid removable lid lifts off when you need access to the flue for inspection or cleaning.
Modern Louvered Construction
The louvered section is the base of the cap — 8 horizontal fins per side, brake-formed from the same sheet metal as the cap body. Above the louvers, a double-stepped fascia transitions into curved standing seam panels that taper inward as they rise. A crown wraps the cap at the top of the curved section. The solid lid sits above the crown and is removable for flue access.
Corners on the curved panel section are fully mitered. The curved panels are lock-seamed, not screwed or caulked. Every component — fins, fascia, panels, crown, lid — is the same material and gauge throughout, so copper patinas uniformly and Kynar color matches across every surface.
The premium top-mount flange (CL-3.4a) is an 8¾" rip with a 2" ledge, mitered corners, set in elastomeric sealant directly on the chimney crown. Side mount uses a vertical drip edge skirt wrapping the crown exterior — no masonry penetration.
Material Options
16 oz Copper — Mill-finish copper that develops a natural verdigris patina over years of exposure. The most visually distinctive option as it ages — warm penny to deep brown to verdigris. All copper components patina uniformly. Copper rivets and brass mandrels throughout. The premium choice for historic homes, high-end new construction, and any project where the cap is meant to be noticed.
Kynar Aluminum (.032) — PVDF Kynar 500 coating in any standard color: Matte Black, Matte White, Dark Bronze, Weathered Zinc, Charcoal Grey, Copper Penny, and more. Color holds indefinitely — Kynar doesn't fade, chalk, or peel under normal exposure. If you have a specific color in mind, message me — I can often match it.
24-Gauge Galvalume Plus — Zinc-aluminum alloy coated steel. The most economical option. Mill-finish silver-grey that weathers to a consistent matte tone. Correct choice when budget is the primary driver and aesthetics are secondary.

Installation
Modern Louvered caps set on top of the chimney crown — no flue liner penetration required. Top mount: the flange sits flush on the crown, set in elastomeric sealant and fastened to the crown surface. Side mount: the drip edge skirt wraps the exterior of the crown. Measure the outside of your chimney at the crown, not the flue tile. Width is always the shortest dimension. Add at least ¼" to each measurement so the cap slides on without binding.
Due to the height and weight of larger Modern Louvered caps, a second set of hands is recommended for positioning on the chimney. No special tools required beyond a caulk gun and elastomeric sealant.

Wood-Framed Chase
Modern Louvered caps work on wood-framed chases as well as masonry chimneys. The flange or drip edge sets on the chase top — use a closed-cell backer rod and elastomeric sealant at the perimeter joint to keep the connection watertight. If your chase top is rotted or needs replacement before the cap goes on, address that first.

About Archaic Metal
I'm Sean. I've been working copper and sheet metal since 1994, trained under master coppersmith Stephen L. Foss at Ye Olde Tin Shop in Haddonfield, NJ. Archaic Metal has been my operation since 2011 — one person, one shop in Berlin, NJ. Every cap I sell is one I fabricated. No outsourcing, no overseas production, no batch runs sitting on a shelf.
