The Board & Batten Top Vent is an extended height chimney cap with a clean architectural profile: solid flat panels on the body, a hip roof on top, and a screened vent section between them. No curves, no stepped crown — just vertical lines that read well on traditional and craftsman-style homes. What It Does
The board and batten panel body extends the effective chimney height above the crown without touching the masonry. A screened vent section runs the full perimeter between the body panels and the hip roof above — blocking rain, debris, and animals while keeping airflow open. The hip roof sheds water in all directions. The base flange sets on the chimney crown. No flue liner penetration required.
Building code requires a chimney to extend at least two feet above any roof surface, ridge, or obstruction within ten feet. When a chimney falls short, an extended height cap adds the needed height directly to the flue without masonry work — functioning the same way chimney pots did in the 18th century. Height problems also cause downdraft. If smoke backs up into the house when the wind picks up, a chimney that doesn't clear surrounding roof lines is often the reason. Adding height fixes it.
Board & Batten Construction
The body panels are flat sheet metal, brake-formed with vertical batten strips to create the board and batten profile. Above the body, a screened vent section runs the full perimeter before the cap transitions to the hip roof. The hip roof is four-sided, fully seamed, and pitches away from center in all directions.
The premium top-mount flange (CL-3.1) is an 8" rip with a 2" ledge, mitered corners, set in elastomeric sealant directly on the chimney crown. Side mount uses a vertical drip edge skirt wrapping the crown exterior — no masonry penetration. Every component is the same material and gauge throughout, so copper patinas uniformly and Kynar color matches across every surface.

Kynar-Coated Aluminum — factory-applied PVDF coating, the same system used on commercial standing-seam roofing. Holds color without fading, chalking, or peeling for 25–50 years. Available in a wide range of architectural colors including black, charcoal, dark bronze, and more. Riveted with stainless steel color-match rivets.

Installation
Board & Batten caps set on top of the chimney crown — no flue liner penetration required. Top mount: the flange sits flush on the crown, set in elastomeric sealant and fastened to the crown surface. Side mount: the drip edge skirt wraps the exterior of the crown. Measure the outside of your chimney at the crown, not the flue tile. Width is always the shortest dimension. Add at least ¼" to each measurement so the cap slides on without binding.
Due to the height of extended height caps, a second set of hands is recommended for positioning on the chimney. No special tools required beyond a caulk gun and elastomeric sealant.

Wood-Framed Chase
If your chimney sits on a prefab wood-framed chase, you may need a chase cover before this cap goes on. The B&B cap mounts on top of the chase cover — it does not have a flat bottom with pre-cut holes for flue pipes. If there's currently no metal cover on your chase, you need both. Board & Batten caps ship LTL freight in a custom-built heat-treated wood crate, fully insured. Freight cost depends on cap size and delivery ZIP — I quote freight separately after you submit your dimensions. I use ABF Freight for most shipments. Typical lead time is 3–4 weeks from measurement confirmation.
